ROWE INDUSTRES' TOXIC PLUME (SUPERFUND SITE)
Located in Sag Harbor, the wells of area residents were contaminated with volatile organic chemicals (VOC's) from the Rowe Industries factory. They had been drinking it for years before the contamination was discovered. Vapors had also been rising from the soil. The EPA declared it a Superfund site and dragged its feet over remediation of the site. There were 18 cancers on one block alone, Carroll Street. Health problems of all sorts abounded. John Destefano, a resident and president of Carroll Street Remediation has, over a period of 18 years, fought to have the groundwater remediated and the health effects of the chemicals investigated. After major battles the EPA has now begun a "pump and treat" clean-up operation. (See Newsletters)
