HYDROLOGIC CYCLE:

(a) Precipitation falls as rain/snow (b) it infiltrates the soil and percolates down into the water table and into the fresh water aquifer (c) the fresh water disperses into the salty water at the freshwater to salt water interface* (d) surface waters (ponds, bays, ocean) evaporate moisture to the atmosphere (e) trees take up water in their roots and evaporate moisture to the atmosphere through their foliage in a process called transpiration

*A groundwater divide runs along the hilly spine of Long Island-the "moraine," an accumulation of sand, gravel, pebbles, boulders, caused by the advance and retreat of icesheets during a succession of ice ages-and so groundwater to the north of the divide generally flows towards the bays, and groundwater to the south flows towards the Atlantic ocean.
