WELL TEST STUDY BY SUFFOLK COUNTY DEPT. OF HEALTH SERVICES

Between 1997-2001 and in conjunction with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) the Suffolk County Department of Health Services (SCDHS) conducted a study by sampling wells that would seem likely to contain pesticides because of their proximity to agricultural areas.

Of those wells that were targeted for testing in the study, 50% of the private wells tested and 24% (23.5%) of the public wells were contaminated with pesticides. Although the SCDHS wants to continue with this study, unfortunately, funding has been cut back by the New York State DEC. (SEE: Newsletter, Summer 2002)
