"SPECIAL GROUNDWATER PROTECTION AREA" (SGPA):
In 1987 the New York State Legislature mandated the protection of Long Island's watersheds under its "Sole Source Aquifer Law" and provided funding to the Long Island Regional Planning Board to create a plan that would identify the hydrogeologic areas on Long Island that contained the highest quality and highest volume of our groundwater reservoir that should be protected in order to ensure our current and future needs of high quality potable water.
In 1992 the Long Island Regional Planning Board produced a plan that mapped out Long Island's "Special Groundwater Protection Areas" that needed to be protected if we were to have potable water in the future. They identified nine hydrogeologic areas across Long Island and designated them as "Special Groundwater Protection Areas." The two SGPA's on the south fork are-The South Fork SGPA which comprises 29,000 acres
2/3's of which are located in Southampton and the rest in East Hampton, and, the Hither Hills SGPA which encompasses 2900 wooded acres in East Hampton. While Hither Hills has been protected through purchase as "open space", the towns have until quite recently failed to protect our most critical watershed areas that occur in Noyac; that are located near and around the East Hampton Airport; and, that are located on,near the Stony Hill aquifer, thereby compromising our best sources of drinking water.
This MAP shows where these "Special Groundwater Protection Areas" are located, and their "core corridors."
